Motorola Inc., which is introducing 20 new cell phones as it tries to avoid slipping to No. 3 in the market, signaled its confidence Wednesday for strong holiday sales and said there are no further product delays in sight.
A year ago, Motorola’s holidays were spoiled by a parts shortage and resulting shipment delays that kept some of its first camera phones—already behind its competitors’—from being available during the biggest season for cell-phone sales.
Cell phone maker Nokia has developed a firewall that claims to protect 3G mobile phone devices from virus attacks which might delete data or rack up huge bills for the owner by auto-dialing premium rate numbers.
Unlike conventional firewalls, which sit on a PC, Nokia’s phone firewall is part of the mobile network itself, which acts as a barrier between the device and the Internet.
According to New Scientist, the firewall protects mobile devices that connect to the network by setting up “pinholes” through which they can send and receive legitimate data to and from the Internet. Data recognized as belonging to a trusted application is allowed to pass through but unknown packets are automatically blocked.

Nokia Siemens Networks and China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) have successfully completed performance testing of the 3GPP release 4 MSC Server System ( MSS ) from Nokia Siemens Networks. The MSS performed with outstanding results in the tests organized by CMCC, demonstrating the Nokia Siemens Networks solution’s capacity, stability and efficiency in data-delivery.The MSC Server System, which is already widely used in commercial networks globally, showed remarkable stability in an overload test which included an continuous 12-hour, 150% data-overload simulation. Despite the simulated data overload, the system ran, on average, at under 35% of total capacity (CPU load). The “Call Success Rate” was higher than 99.999%, and SMS delivery boasted a 100% success rate. “We are pleased that the CMCC simulation was successful and we are confident in our MSC Server’s ability to meet future mobile volume demands,” said Jürgen Walter, head of Service Core and Applications, Nokia Siemens Networks. “CMCC operates one of the largest and densest GSM mobile networks in the world. Samsung unveiled two new fashionable sliders with touch-sensitive controls plus a music-oriented device. Samsung E950 is a successor of the Samsung E900 while the Samsung J600 is a budget-oriented model which definitely manages to look the part. Both the handsets feature touch sensitive controls as their main navigation solutions. The Samsung F210 is the next music handset in swivel form factor by the Korean manufacturer after Samsung X830 and Samsung F200.The Samsung E950 comes with a 3 megapixel (possibly autofocus?) camera and a fashionable metal finish. The handset is among the first Samsung mobiles said to include a new graphical user interface. The touch-sensitive control is performed through a small (1.2″) touch-sensitive 65K colors OLED display. Interacting with the user interface on the small display is immediately transferred to the main 2″ 262K color TFT display with a QVGA resolution.
In terms of connectivity, the Samsung E950 is limited to tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE network support plus stereo Bluetooth and USB. Other features include FM radio, TV out jack and a microSD memory cardslot used to expand the available 70MB of integrated memory.
