Nokias Total Onslaught

Nokia, not content with blitzing the world with new models like the E90, the lush Luna and the tasty 6500, has rung up a #1 spot in AMR Research’s Supply Chain Top 25.

As you know, this year the Finns showed up at #13 on BusinessWeek’s recently published list of the 50 most innovative companies, lengthened their lead over Motorola in the phone handset stakes and moved 200 million units of one phone model.

Let’s take a look how they got there:

The math
To sell large numbers of anything; it helps to have huge, growing markets with an insatiable desire for your stuff. Ok, so it may not sell for top dollar but you might get oh, say, orders of $2.5 billion at a time. No wonder Nokia increased its lead in the world’s biggest emerging markets again this year.

Design it right
Not as sexy as a huge megapixel count, but simple, innovative features for local needs, such as phones which lend themselves to phone sharing have consolidated Nokia’s appeal in emerging markets. The new Nokia design studio in Bangalore takes the global/local theme even further.

Show the people
Nokia’s interesting marketing efforts have included Nokia-branded vans and train carriages as concept stores. Both have assistants who show off the latest models to potential purchasers, even to passersby during long stops at stations.

True innovation is showing up all over the place at Nokia as they get back on top of their game and it seems to be delivering the results.

Nokia N73 X-series

If you’re tempted by Three’s new flat-price X-Series mobile internet service you’ll almost certainly be in the market for a new mobile phone to go with it. That’s because only a handful of phones are compatible with the particular X-Series software and services.

Even so, none of those can deliver every feature on the X-Series menu. That should change as new handsets are released in the coming months, but right now the phone that ticks the most boxes is Nokia’s N73.

This gives you online chat through MSN and Yahoo Messenger, free phone calls over Skype and the ability to play music and videos from your home PC using the new Orb remote access software.

It can’t tap into the full speed of the three networks, which has just been upgraded from the average 300Kbps of 3G to high-speed HSDPA - which runs up to five times as fast. This will be noticeable only if you’re intent on using the N73 as a mobile broadband modem for your laptop.

The Nokia N76’s Steel Chassis

First of all, it’s the hardware is much sturdier in this phone than any other Nokia I’ve seen in awhile. Credit goes to the steel chassis.

Even the lid stood up to a firm twist. Software and spec wise, the N76 very similar to the 2MP, Symbian 60, N75 clamshell I wrote about two months ago, so you can look for more info there. The software inside lacks the Singular additions the N75 has. If you missed it, the keypad is very RAZR like.

The N76 isn’t subsidized like the N75. And it doesn’t have 3G/UMTS. Other than that, I love it like I love all N Series Nokia phones. And this comes in red.

Because of the price, and the lack of 3g, I might consider the AT&T N75 to be a better deal, but you have to worry about that pesky contract. I’d go for the contract.

Nokia’s new WiBree technology enables devide to device communication like Bluetooth but uses less power.

The world’s top mobile phone maker, Nokia announced its new short-range technology operating in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band that will be a cost-effective “complementation” for the Bluetooth standard. The new technology is will less power and costs less. The company believes this technology might soon become an industry norm.

But, Wibree uses range (10 meters) and data rate (1 MB) are almost identical to that of Bluetooth. The main difference being, Wibree uses a fraction of the power used by Bluetooth. This helps enabling personal-area communications with watches, wireless keyboards, toys and so on which have limited battery capacity.

Bluetooth uses fixed packet lengths, whereas Wibree utilizes dynamic lengths and that is why consumes less power. It also does not incorporate frequency hopping as Bluetooth does. Wibree is perfect solution in situations where bursty data transfers are needed. Bluetooth is better equipped to handle larger data loads.

Bluetooth devices are able to communicate with each other to ask about capabilities and functions. This is known as the Service Discovery Protocol. It prevents the user from sending documents to your headset or routing a phone call to your printer. Wibree will have something very intelligent to replace this, but we don’t know that as yet.

Lots of companies are working closely with Nokia to define the Wibree specification. Companies such as Broadcom, Epson, and Nordic Semiconductor. Nokia is hoping to submit the technology to a worldwide standardization process, which could eventually help it to gain wider support.

Nokia’s Wibree is not the only one contender for use in wireless sensors. There are rivals like Zigbee and Zensys too. Zigbee is an ongoing standardization project and has similar characteristics to Wibree. As per the sound byte from these rivals they feel Wibree seems like a marketing spec and are not worried about it at all. They also think Wibree is simply a proprietary solution masked as some type of industry driven push.

Nokia and S60 make the Web personal on your mobile

Nokia introduces widget support for S60 and takes a significant step in realizing its vision of transforming mobility and the Internet with rich Web 2.0 experiences. S60 will be the first mobile software platform that enables the creation of widgets using familiar standards-based Web technologies. Available to all S60 licensees, widget support enhances the Internet experience on a mobile by bringing a personal Web experience to a personal device.

Widgets allow people to personalize Internet content into lightweight Web applications and stay current with the things that matter to them. While widgets have been available on PCs for some time, they bring particular advantages to mobile devices, as mobiles are highly personal and among the few items that we always carry with us.

The world’s leading smartphone software, S60 on Symbian OS, will be complemented with Web Run-Time, a Web application development environment, enabling the development of widgets and integrated Web applications for mobile devices with familiar standards-based Web technologies, such as Ajax, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.

Web Run-Time is powered by the same feature rich, open-source environment used by the Web Browser for S60, the world’s first full HTML browser bringing a desktop-like browsing experience to millions of S60 mobile devices.

Web Run-Time offers numerous possibilities for Web application development. As the Web Run-Time is built with standard Web technologies, developers can create new innovative widgets and also migrate existing widgets from the desktop to S60 with minimal effort. In the future, widgets will benefit from connecting both to Web 2.0 services, Web content and to the core applications and capabilities of S60, such as phonebook, calendar and GPS.

Web Run-Time and widget support will be available to S60 licensees as part of the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. Tools, documentation and a software developer kit for widget development will be made available via Forum Nokia during the third quarter 2007. Widgets will be distributed to users through several channels, one of which is WidSets, a popular consumer Internet service, which allows users to personalize their mobile Internet experience.
