Motorola to Introduce 20 New Cell Phones

Motorola Inc., which is introducing 20 new cell phones as it tries to avoid slipping to No. 3 in the market, signaled its confidence Wednesday for strong holiday sales and said there are no further product delays in sight.

A year ago, Motorola’s holidays were spoiled by a parts shortage and resulting shipment delays that kept some of its first camera phones—already behind its competitors’—from being available during the biggest season for cell-phone sales.

Nokias Total Onslaught

Nokia, not content with blitzing the world with new models like the E90, the lush Luna and the tasty 6500, has rung up a #1 spot in AMR Research’s Supply Chain Top 25.

As you know, this year the Finns showed up at #13 on BusinessWeek’s recently published list of the 50 most innovative companies, lengthened their lead over Motorola in the phone handset stakes and moved 200 million units of one phone model.

Let’s take a look how they got there:

The math
To sell large numbers of anything; it helps to have huge, growing markets with an insatiable desire for your stuff. Ok, so it may not sell for top dollar but you might get oh, say, orders of $2.5 billion at a time. No wonder Nokia increased its lead in the world’s biggest emerging markets again this year.

Design it right
Not as sexy as a huge megapixel count, but simple, innovative features for local needs, such as phones which lend themselves to phone sharing have consolidated Nokia’s appeal in emerging markets. The new Nokia design studio in Bangalore takes the global/local theme even further.

Show the people
Nokia’s interesting marketing efforts have included Nokia-branded vans and train carriages as concept stores. Both have assistants who show off the latest models to potential purchasers, even to passersby during long stops at stations.

True innovation is showing up all over the place at Nokia as they get back on top of their game and it seems to be delivering the results.

Nokia N73 X-series

If you’re tempted by Three’s new flat-price X-Series mobile internet service you’ll almost certainly be in the market for a new mobile phone to go with it. That’s because only a handful of phones are compatible with the particular X-Series software and services.

Even so, none of those can deliver every feature on the X-Series menu. That should change as new handsets are released in the coming months, but right now the phone that ticks the most boxes is Nokia’s N73.

This gives you online chat through MSN and Yahoo Messenger, free phone calls over Skype and the ability to play music and videos from your home PC using the new Orb remote access software.

It can’t tap into the full speed of the three networks, which has just been upgraded from the average 300Kbps of 3G to high-speed HSDPA - which runs up to five times as fast. This will be noticeable only if you’re intent on using the N73 as a mobile broadband modem for your laptop.

The Nokia N76’s Steel Chassis

First of all, it’s the hardware is much sturdier in this phone than any other Nokia I’ve seen in awhile. Credit goes to the steel chassis.

Even the lid stood up to a firm twist. Software and spec wise, the N76 very similar to the 2MP, Symbian 60, N75 clamshell I wrote about two months ago, so you can look for more info there. The software inside lacks the Singular additions the N75 has. If you missed it, the keypad is very RAZR like.

The N76 isn’t subsidized like the N75. And it doesn’t have 3G/UMTS. Other than that, I love it like I love all N Series Nokia phones. And this comes in red.

Because of the price, and the lack of 3g, I might consider the AT&T N75 to be a better deal, but you have to worry about that pesky contract. I’d go for the contract.
